Mixed-Media Narrative Portraiture
Around 2009, Sprouse began experimenting with the concept of combining smaller versions of his portraits modeled after vintage photographs with elements of authentic vintage ephemera in order to strengthen the sense of the narrative in his work.
By focusing on smaller portraits that usually featured only certain area’s of his model’s face and the inclusion of ephemeral collage carefully selected to visually sync with the essence of the individual work, Sprouse created a line of work that truly act like visual short stories where the plot is composed of elements of the work.
Torn antique photographs, snippets of old letters, post cards, receipts, newsprint, journals and more lead the story in connection to the viewer’s interpretation of the visual elements of the work.
The thumbnails below feature details from each individual piece they represent. Click on the thumbnail to see the work in its entirety.
